Everywhere

Original Photo by Cecilia Marie Pulliam

I see and hear God everywhere in my life.

I hear him in the wind sighing through the pine boughs outside my window. His voice roars in the creek thundering through its rocky canyon beside the house.

I see him in the soft blush of first morning light and in the triumphant shout of a flaming sunset.

I hear him in a favorite song, in the sweet voices of friends.

He comforts me through scripture and the kindness of strangers.

He is in my sorrows and my joys, in my thoughts and in my heart.

I never want to experience a moment without Him.

Lord, keep me close to you, always. Amen.

Happy Valentine's Day, Sweetheart

For the first few years of marriage, my husband and I followed all the usual traditions, but as we aged, we found other ways of saying, “I love you.”

When he repeats the same story, I listen as if hearing it for the first time. I make the bed, cook his favorite foods, and clean the kitchen without complaining. When he leaves his used napkin beside his chair, I pick it up without announcing it.

We both take turns getting up with the puppy and letting the other one sleep. One of us offers to do the chore we both hate — with a smile. We don’t say cruel things when we’re angry and think the best when it looks the worst.

The list goes on, encompassing a lifetime of little things that all add up to one big, “I love you.”
As the marriage vows state, we love and cherish each other through lost jobs, health challenges, forgetfulness, and sometimes feeling taken for granted.

Words are important too. I tell my husband I love him, admire him, respect him, and appreciate all the things he does for our welfare. I say it often, not just now and then. He tells me the same. We are a partnership, built on mutual respect and admiration for the other’s abilities and contributions.

Today we won’t go out to dinner. We’d rather eat at home, away from the crowds. We
won’t exchange cards. Instead, we will restate our love in the kitchen over coffee. We will spend the day doing our usual things, peppered with touches, kisses, and long conversations. For us, Valentine’s is every day.

Morning Prayer

The world is waking. The sun tints the eastern sky in rose and gold. Noisy engines cut through the silence, drowning the gentler twitter of songbirds. The more raucous crows join the competition, punctuated by quacking ducks and a blaring stereo.

I long for the quiet places.

A famous painting titled, Peace, depicts a tree standing alongside a roaring waterfall, holding a nesting bird. It is the perfect depiction.

Our peace is in our hearts, not in the world. With your help, Lord, I can sit beside the gurgling brook in spite of the world’s noise, if I will only remember where true peace resides. Amen

The Ugly Tree

Our new home is beautifully landscaped with an unending display of flowers, shrubs and trees. All my favorites are here: the Japanese maple, roses, daisies, petunias, snapdragons, flowering vines, iris, daffodils, several varieties of flowering ground cover, columbine, lilies and more I have yet to identify. The tapestry of texture and color is ever changing and breathtaking to behold. All except one.

On the corner of the house is a weeping evergreen which reminds me of a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Well, perhaps a bit fuller than that as it at least has leaves, but it is still skimpy compared to the divine silver spruce in the back yard.

My husband and I began plotting this tree's demise the moment we bought the house and have been pouring over gardening books looking for a replacement.

This morning, however, I've had a change of heart regarding this less than perfect tree. Well, let's say God changed my heart.

For reasons I cannot fathom, birds love this tree. I'm not sure what the attraction is as its branches are not full enough to offer much in the way of protection. There are many other trees in the neighborhood, of all shapes and sizes a virtual wonderland of foliage for feathered friends, and yet this thin little tree is one of their favorites.
