Pride

I never thought of myself as a prideful person, but I am.

I’ve taken pride in my writing and painting, but always reminded myself of the proverb, “Pride comes before a fall”. Whenever I boasted, criticism knocked me down a peg or two.

This week, God pointed out a much bigger and self-destructive issue.

I have bragged about the fact at my age I can still lift 40 pounds of dog food and move heavy furniture. Now that my house is under contract to sell, I deceived myself in thinking I didn't want to impose on my friends by asking for help. In reality, it was pride preventing me from asking, and I set myself up for a literal fall. I did a double step going into church on Sunday, almost too tired to walk.

I’m a silly old woman sometimes. Especially with so many friends offering to help!

The Holy Spirit smacked me up the side of the head and pointed out my foolishness. I finally swallowed my pride and accepted help.

God not only answers our prayers, He also protects ourselves from ourselves — if we listen.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you discipling your wayward child and protecting her in the process.  Amen.

  1. Yay, thank You, Lord, for Marie's house going under contract!

Oh yes, that pesky pride thing vs asking for help. I've been there! It's comforting to know that some personalities ARE helpers, they really, truly want to help.

    1. They do, and we prideful-I-can-do-it-all-myself personalities need to say, "Yes and thank you."

  2. Well I am glad you received or are receiving the help you need. I am definitely in need of help now, due to a diagnosis of severe degeneration of the spine with nerve damage I am finding it very hard to cope with the simplest jobs, just standing at the sink to wash dishes or scrub veg is very painful. I am waiting for an assessment from a neurosurgeon in May and hoping he can help me somehow.
I really get annoyed, I can't do my gardening anymore as I can't bend or lift anything remotely heavy. I am fortunate to have friends and neighbours who are willing to help with shopping or driving to appointments etc., I have used local contractors recently, one to clean my electric oven, it looks like new again and today had one of my bedroom carpets professionally cleaned, it is 38 years old and he did a fantastic job on it, the room had been used for several years as a computer room/office now it will be returned to being a bedroom.
We have had Air Source heating installed this past month by our Housing Association and because we were both unable to move heavy furniture we have had to hire a storage container and removal man to put the majority of furniture in storage, before it comes back we need to redecorate. I am hoping I can manage to strip and replace some wallpaper but the painting of ceilings etc., is being done by a Ukrainian man, he is very meticulous and doing a great job.
The installation of the Heat Source was a nightmare, they had to remove a fireplace and back boiler plus old pipes and radiators, I have never seen so much dust, it was horrendous. It will be a while before we can get the furniture moved back in but we are taking it easy, especially as Jim has just had an operation on his left eye to fix a hole in the Macula. He became an emergency two days later and had to go back to hospital as the pressure in his eye was too great, now I am having to put drops in his eye ten times a day. God has been good, he still has 21 days of drops but his sight in that eye is already returning, he has certainly received a lot of prayer, here in the UK and via our Maui, Hawaii Bible Study Zoom group meetings.
I pray your house sale goes smoothly, are you moving very far?

  3. First, Jackie, I'm sorry to hear of your husband's and your health issues. May God heal you both. All that remodeling you're doing. Ugh. That's a lot of work. Thank goodness you have help! I'm moving one state over, from Idaho back to my home state of Oregon, where I was born and raised. I'm moving closer to my family. So far, things are going smoothly. Thank you for your prayers. You and your husband are in mine too. God bless.
