The darkness is some...Your husband is right, Debra. The darkness is something we can't experience here in North America. There is a reason historians call Africa the Dark Continent. And yes, night is incredibly active. More noise than daytime. After being in the bush for four weeks we had a terrible time adjusting to urban life again. The lights were too bright, traffic too loud. It was all very odd.
